Aboard Astraea

Weekend Getaway

|

This weekend we planned a quick getaway to Point Loma. We haven’t done a cruise since we returned from Catalina in September so it was time to shake out the cobwebs and get underway and go farther than the pump out dock!

Very calm at Pier 32

We set off Saturday morning around 1000 and motored up through the calm bay. It was pretty relaxing letting the autopilot do the driving because there wasn’t much traffic on the bay. We tied up to slip 506 at Point Loma Marina for free, using our reciprocal benefits. 506 only had 50 amp shore power so we moved over to slip 503 where there was 30 amp. I wanted to go to LaPlaya anchorage, but was concerned about it getting too cold onboard for Sully at night.

Here's how Sully enjoyed the trip. He's not much of a deckhand yet.

When we were in Point Loma we walked over to Downwind Marine to pick up some parts to finish turning Sully’s V-Berth in to a crib. We spent the rest of the afternoon putting in grommets, cleats and padeyes. Then we went out to dinner with Eric, Jaime and her Mom at Pizza Nova. We shared our favorite appetizer, the baked garlic. They brought me an unexpected birthday present, Shellback Rum! Of course we went back to the boat after dinner to sample it. It’s the smoothest rum I’ve ever had, with a caramel spice it goes down easy.

The next day Natalie, Sullivan and I sailed back to Pier 32. I just unfurled the jib and we sailed downwind at 3.5 to 5.2 knots as darkness approached.

It was good to get Astraea out of the marina again and under sail. Natalie enjoyed our trip and wants to get away more often. We plan to go out to a different marina or anchorage overnight at least once a month from now on.
